Porsche ceramic brakes: what replacement really costs
PCCB is the option that most often turns a bargain used Porsche into an expensive one. Worth understanding before you buy, not after.
What they are
Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes use carbon-ceramic discs instead of cast iron. They resist fade under sustained heavy use, shed a large amount of unsprung weight, and barely produce brake dust.
On a car that will see track use or repeated hard road driving, they are genuinely excellent. On a car that does school runs, they are an expensive way to keep the wheels clean.
The cost
Replacement is measured in thousands per axle, not hundreds — a full set is one of the largest single consumable bills in road-car ownership. Pads are also specific to the system and not cheap.
We are deliberately not quoting a figure, because it moves with model, supplier and exchange rate. Get a current quote from a marque specialist for the exact car before you commit. That phone call is the cheapest due diligence available.
Why they wear out
Ceramic discs do not wear like iron ones. They lose mass gradually through oxidation and micro-erosion, and the manufacturer specifies a minimum weight. A disc can look perfect and still be at its limit.
That is the trap: visual inspection tells you almost nothing. The disc must be weighed, and the figure compared to the specification.
What accelerates the wear
- Track use — the thing they are designed for is also what consumes them
- Aggressive road driving, particularly repeated hard stops from speed
- Wrong pads — non-specification pads damage the disc surface
- Long storage in damp conditions, which can pit the surface
What this means when buying
A ceramic-equipped car with worn discs is worth less than an equivalent car on steel brakes, not more — because the buyer inherits a large, near-term bill. The option premium only exists while the discs have life in them.
So the questions to ask are:
- Are the discs ceramic? (Confirm — they are visually distinctive but people get it wrong.)
- Have they been weighed, and what were the figures against specification?
- Is there history of replacement, and when?
- Has the car been tracked?
Should you want them?
If you track the car: yes, clearly. If you do not: a well-maintained steel-braked car is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and gives away nothing you will ever notice on the road.
Plenty of buyers chase the option because it appears on the spec sheet as a premium item. It is only a premium item while it has life left in it.
