Is a used Porsche expensive to run?

Updated 25 August 2026

Less than people fear, more than people hope, and enormously dependent on which car and which specification.

Servicing

Main-dealer servicing is priced as a premium marque. A good independent specialist typically costs meaningfully less for equivalent work, and on an out-of-warranty car that is the sensible route.

Intervals are reasonable. Nothing about routine servicing on a modern Porsche is unusual.

Tyres

A genuine cost. These are heavy, powerful, wide-tyred cars and they use tyres accordingly — particularly the four-wheel-drive Turbos and the electric SUVs, where weight and torque combine.

Budget for correct-specification tyres. Fitting cheap alternatives to a car of this capability is a false economy and it shows in how the car behaves.

Brakes

Steel brakes are conventional in cost. Ceramics are not — replacement is a very large sum, and it is the single most common unpleasant surprise in used Porsche ownership.

If a car has ceramics, establish their condition before purchase and factor replacement into the price if they are worn.

Fuel

A 911 Turbo driven gently returns figures that surprise people; driven as intended, it does not. The Macan S is reasonable for what it is. The electric cars are cheap to run if you charge at home and less so if you rely on public rapid charging.

Insurance

Varies enormously by model, driver and postcode. Get quotes before committing — the spread between insurers on these cars is wider than on ordinary vehicles.

Depreciation

Usually the largest cost, and where buying used does most of the work for you. The steepest drop has already happened on a two- or three-year-old car.

Well-specified, well-documented cars depreciate more slowly, which is another argument for buying the right specification rather than the cheapest example.

The honest summary

A used Porsche bought with good history and sensible specification is not dramatically more expensive to run than any premium car of similar performance. A neglected one bought cheaply can be ruinous. The purchase decision is where the running costs are really determined.
