911 Turbo: 991.2 vs 992
The 992 Turbo is the better car by every measurable standard. The 991.2 may still be the better buy.
What changed
The 992 is wider, stiffer and more powerful, with a longer eight-speed PDK, improved aerodynamics and a substantially more sophisticated chassis. It is quicker in every circumstance and more comfortable while doing it.
Where the 991.2 holds its ground
Price, mainly — the gap is large and the performance gap is not proportionate. Both are far faster than any public road permits.
Some drivers also prefer the 991’s narrower body and slightly more mechanical feel. The 992 insulates you more; whether that is refinement or distance depends on what you want from the car.
The 991.1 / 991.2 distinction
Worth knowing. Gen 2 (2015 on) brought more power, revised turbos and aerodynamic changes. When people talk about the 991 Turbo being a sweet spot, they generally mean the Gen 2.
Running costs
Similar in principle, but age matters. A 991.2 is out of warranty and closer to consumable replacement — tyres, brakes, and ceramic discs if fitted. Budget for that when comparing purchase prices.
Which to buy
If budget is not the constraint, buy the 992 — it is a genuinely better car and will hold value more predictably in the near term.
If you want the most performance per pound, a well-specified, well-documented 991.2 Turbo is one of the strongest propositions in modern Porsche. Prioritise specification and history over mileage and colour.
