Approved used vs independent specialist: an honest comparison
Porsche Centres sell approved-used cars with a manufacturer warranty. We are an independent. Here is the honest comparison, including where they win.
What approved used gives you
- A manufacturer-backed warranty, typically 24 months, honoured across the network
- A standardised multi-point inspection
- Recourse to a large organisation if something goes badly wrong
- Finance products from Porsche’s own arm
That is a real product and for some buyers it is the right one. If certainty matters more than price, buy approved used and do not feel talked out of it.
What it costs
A premium, and a narrower choice. Centres stock what fits their programme: recent, mainstream specifications, within age and mileage limits. Older cars, unusual specifications, and anything approaching modern-classic status fall outside it.
The inspection is also a standard checklist rather than a marque-specialist’s opinion on that individual car.
What an independent gives you
- Cars the programme excludes — a 1989 928, an air-cooled car, a specific option combination
- Price, without the programme overhead
- A straight description. We will tell you where the history has a gap, because you will find out anyway and we would rather you heard it from us
- Part exchange against anything, not just the marque
Warranty, honestly
An independent warranty is an insurance product, not a manufacturer commitment. Quality varies enormously. If you are offered one, read what is actually covered, what the claim limit is, and whether wear items are excluded.
Some buyers are better served by buying the right car with good history and setting aside what the warranty would have cost. That is a legitimate strategy on a well-documented example and a poor one on a mystery car.
Getting the best of both
Nothing stops you buying from an independent and having the car inspected by a marque specialist first. We actively encourage it — a car worth buying survives scrutiny, and an inspection costs a fraction of what it can save.
You can often also arrange independent warranty cover separately, on your terms rather than bundled.
How to choose
Buy approved used if you want a recent, mainstream car and are willing to pay for the certainty.
